Thomas Cruise Mapother IV, better known as Tom Cruise, is an American actor and producer who has achieved worldwide fame and success. Born in Syracuse, New York on July 3, 1962, Cruise has become one of the highest-paid actors in the world, having received several awards including an honorary Palme d'Or and three Golden Globes. Cruise's career began in 1981 when he starred in the film Risky Business. This role catapulted him to stardom and he went on to star in a number of successful films such as Top Gun, Rain Man, and Born on the Fourth of July.

His performance in the latter earned him a Golden Globe for Best Motion Picture Dramatic Actor, the Chicago Film Critics Association Award for Best Actor, the People's Choice Award for Favorite Film Actor, a nomination for the BAFTA Award for Best Leading Actor and his first Oscar nomination for Best Actor. He famously saved Ray-Ban from financial ruin with his appearances in Risky Business, Top Gun, and Rain Man. He also attended the 72nd annual Academy Awards with his then-wife Nicole Kidman in 2000.
